What is Camel Rock?
Camel Rock is a natural rock formation in the Mleiha area of Sharjah, weathered into the shape of a kneeling camel. You will see it on UAE tourism brochures. It is one of the few desert landmarks that looks in photos exactly the way it looks in person.
The drive out is the off-road part. The formation itself sits about a five-minute walk from the parking area, so this is a spot you reach rather than one you climb.
How hard is the drive?
Camel Rock is graded Beginner in the OffroadPal app. It is the easiest of the Mleiha landmarks. Here is how it compares with what is nearby:

That grading is the reason to start here. You get a real desert destination without a technical challenge attached to it.
When should you go?
October to April is the comfortable window, as it is across the UAE. In the hot months, drive at dawn or late afternoon. The rock gives you no real shade, and the walk is fully exposed to the sun.
Sunset is the popular hour for photographs, which also means the parking area is busiest then.
What should you bring?
The kit is the standard beginner set, not a special list:
- A deflator and a compressor. Air down for the sand on the way in and re-inflate before you rejoin tarmac (see tyre pressure for sand).
- More water than you plan to drink. The walk is short, but there is no shade at all.
- Basic recovery gear, even on a beginner-graded spot. “Beginner” describes the terrain. It does not mean nothing can go wrong.
- At least one other vehicle. The full checklist covers the rest.
Turn it into a full day
Camel Rock pairs well with the Fossil Rock and Mleiha archaeology loop. If you plan them together, do Camel Rock first. The easy sand warms you up before Fossil Rock’s mixed terrain, and that works better than the other way round.
A word on the park next door, so nobody overcorrects: Mleiha National Park (Emiri Decree 16/2024) fenced ground on the Fossil Rock side, and driving inside the park needs a permit. Camel Rock itself sits roughly 15 km from the park — clubs were still running drives on this side in mid-August 2026 — but the park’s boundary map has never been published, which is the honest reason to stay informed rather than assume. The one thing to remember
This is a destination drive, not a technical one. Air down properly. Pick your hour with the unshaded walk in mind. Treat it as the confidence-builder it is.
