Where is Al Qudra?

Al Qudra sits south of Dubai, off the Al Qudra road, inside the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. The landmark everyone navigates by is the Al Qudra Lakes. They are a man-made network of pools and reed beds, and they include the much-photographed Love Lake. Graded roads run the whole way in, so an ordinary car reaches the water fine. You only need a 4x4 once you leave the tarmac for sand.

That mix is the whole appeal. It’s close to the city, it’s easy to find, and few desert drives in the country are this easy to reach.

Is Al Qudra good for a first off-road drive?

Yes. This is the easy end of the scale. The dunes are low and rolling rather than steep, so a mistake here usually costs you ten minutes of digging instead of a recovery vehicle. Al Qudra and Al Badayer are the two names UAE drivers give newcomers who ask where to start.

When’s the best time to go?

The cooler months are the easy answer. In hot weather, go early morning or late afternoon and skip the middle of the day completely. Al Qudra suits that better than most spots because access is so fast. You can be on sand shortly after leaving the road, drive for an hour, and be back out before dark. It’s busy at weekends and around sunset. That is a safety benefit as much as an annoyance, because help is usually nearby.

Which parts of Al Marmoom can you actually drive?

This is the part worth reading twice. “Desert near Dubai” is not one single set of rules.

What wildlife will you see?

Oryx, gazelle and desert foxes, plus a lot of birds drawn to the water. That’s why Al Marmoom exists, and it’s why the driving rules are stricter here than on an ordinary patch of sand. The animals are used to vehicles on the established tracks. Vehicles that leave those tracks unsettle them.

Treat it as a reserve where you are a guest:

Keep to the tracks. Don’t make new ones across open ground.
Don’t drive at animals for a photo, and don’t follow them.
Take every piece of rubbish home. The lakes already attract picnic litter, so don’t add to it.
Watch for cyclists and families near the lakes. The cycle track is well used.

What should you do before you drive?

Easy ground is still sand. Run through this every time:
