What is Sweihan?
Sweihan is the dune field inland in the Abu Dhabi emirate, roughly between Dubai and Al Ain — the town itself sits about 70 km northwest of Al Ain city. The approach is easy paved road, then open sand. Drivers call it “Little Liwa” — and that nickname needs its full sentence: it describes the character of the sand, not a smaller version of Liwa. Liwa proper is a separate destination 200+ km south, one of the most serious dune environments in the country, and it is not the next step after Sweihan but several steps beyond it. Sweihan is where drivers build the soft-sand skills that the deep south asks for later.
The staging area at the Ramlat Sweihan access sits at the coordinates on this page. It is the entrance, not the destination. The dunes open out from there — the whole sand sheet is continuous with the Al Faya belt to the southwest.
How hard is it?
Graded Intermediate in the OffroadPal app. What makes it harder than a beginner spot is the sand itself, not the slopes:

Sweihan is known for pale, powdery sand that feels soft under the tyres. Keep your momentum up. If you slow down or hesitate, you get stuck.
One field, many named corners
Sweihan is a system, not a single pin. The OffroadPal app carries a dozen named spots across it — the entrance staging area on this page, the antenna landmark, a natural pond that club drives use as a destination, and a string of bowls and camp areas drivers have named over the years. Each carries its own grade in the app; the field gets harder the deeper you go, so read the pin you are actually standing at, not this page’s entrance grade.
Two named corners you will hear about:
- Tilal Swaihan, the eastern side with its own fuel station — a big enough venue that the 41st Gulf News Fun Drive looped through it in February 2023 with hundreds of cars.
- Swaihan Bowl, a camping area Gulf News’ off-road experts list between Sweihan and Al Saad — “massive red dunes… you may camp anywhere off the truck road”, by their description. It sits well east of the entrance on this page.
What drivers report about the field as a whole, from years of club threads: “massive long range dunes”, with one long-running community review scoring Sweihan 80% for scenery, 90% for excitement and 95% for versatility — the all-rounder score is why so many club drives start here. The neighbouring corner of the same system is Nagrah, which drivers describe as “monstrous dunes and deserted sabkhas” — that is the direction the field grows teeth.
What should you have before you go?
- Your first dunes already done. You should be comfortable with airing down, throttle control and reading a bowl.
- Recovery gear you have actually used, not just packed: boards, a shovel, a rated rope and shackles.
- A compressor. At 14–16 psi you are not driving home on those tyres.
- Two to three vehicles. Enough capacity that one stuck car is an inconvenience, not an incident.

When should you go?
October to April. Sweihan is not a casual summer destination, and here the warning has a number attached: Sweihan holds the UAE’s all-time heat record — 52.1°C, recorded in July 2002. The hottest place ever measured in the country is this dune field. The sand is at its softest and driest when it is hottest, and there is no shade out there. Early morning is both cooler and firmer. Overnight dew darkens and stiffens the surface, and the same line is at its softest by mid-afternoon.
Fuel and the town
Sweihan town (population around 5,400) is the supply anchor: directory listings put an ADNOC station in town and another out at Tilal Swaihan, which is the one club drives finish at. Fill up before the sand — the field is big enough that fuel planning is part of the drive, not an afterthought. The landmark you cannot miss on the approach is the Noor Abu Dhabi solar plant, over three million panels on the field’s edge.
Where does Sweihan fit in?
Sweihan sits in the middle. Beginners start at Al Qudra or Big Red. Sweihan is where the soft-sand skill actually gets built. Drivers heading for Liwa or advanced terrain treat their Sweihan hours as the prerequisite.

Momentum is what matters most here. Keep it, plan your line before you drop into the bowl, and never come alone.
