Where is Tal Moreeb?

At the bottom of the Liwa crescent, about 25 km south of Mezaira’a, at 22.9805, 53.7866 — the OffroadPal pin sits within 90 metres of the published summit coordinates. Behind it the Rub’ al Khali begins: the Empty Quarter, the largest contiguous sand desert on Earth. The Saudi border is close. This is as far south as UAE dune driving goes.

The approach is the strangest part: a purpose-built 22 km paved road leaves the E90 south of Mezaira’a and dead-ends at the dune’s base — a government-built highway to a sand dune, well signposted, with a large flat staging and parking area at the end. From Abu Dhabi: E11 west to Tarif, E45 south through Madinat Zayed to the Mezaira’a roundabout, then follow the signs. Fill up at the Mezaira’a ADNOC (station 977) — it is the last permanent fuel, and the dune is 25–30 km beyond it.

The name is a warning label

“Moreeb” comes from the Arabic for terrifying — The National translates Tal Moreeb as “horror hill”. The name is commonly explained by the dune’s height and the 50-degree slipface. We found no scholarly source for the etymology, so take it as the widely repeated reading — but standing at the base looking up, you will not argue with it.

How tall is it? The honest answer is a range

Nobody has published a survey. The marketed figure is 300 m; the skeptic’s counterweight is the 109 m prominence. What is not disputed: the slipface runs about 1,600 m long, and it is the biggest single climb in UAE motorsport. We print the spread rather than picking a number, because the numbers we do state on this site have to stay believable.

The festival: 700,000 people and a 7-second hill climb

Every December the base area becomes the Liwa International Festival — the UAE’s biggest desert event, grown from informal Emirati hill-climb contests that started around 2001. The 2025–26 edition ran 23 days and drew over 700,000 visitors; motorsport participation jumped 47% year on year. The signature event is the hill-climb championship: purpose-built machines up to roughly 3,500 hp drag-racing up the slipface, with winning runs reported around the 7-second mark. ADNOC’s festival operation alone says something about the scale — 8 mobile fuel trucks plus the Mezaira’a station, serving more than 8,000 vehicles a day.

The next edition is confirmed: 11 December 2026 – 2 January 2027. During those weeks expect the base area to be a managed, ticketed event ground, hotels across Liwa to surge-price, and buggy noise around the dune day and night — drivers who camp during the festival report doing it well away from the base. Bookings run through the Liwa Sports Club app.

Outside the festival

The site reverts to open desert quiet. What visitors currently report: the dune’s perimeter is largely fenced — installed, per those reports, to stop dune-bashing damage to the fragile slipface ecosystem — with public entry channelled through the north-west parking area. Walking up takes 30–40 minutes with breaks; locals offer dune-car rides to the top for about AED 100.

Can you drive your own 4x4 up the face outside festival season? No published rule answers that, and we will not pretend one exists. Drivers have long done it; the fencing suggests access is now managed; ask on the ground before you commit. When to go

October to April, like all of Al Dhafra — this region posts the UAE’s hottest readings almost every summer. January and February, right after the festival crowds leave, are the quiet sweet spot drivers report.

OffroadPal grades are indicative and spots are not inspected. Nothing on this page asserts that Tal Moreeb — the dune, the drive, or the desert around it — is safe. The app lists our pin at the base as Advanced-graded country, and that is about the neighbourhood, not just the hill: this is the edge of the Empty Quarter, and the rules that keep people out of trouble here are the Liwa rules, not the city-desert ones.

Can you drive to Tal Moreeb in a normal car?

To the base, yes. A dedicated 22 km paved road runs from the E90 south of Mezaira'a straight to a parking area at the foot of the dune — watch for sand drifting across the tarmac. Driving anywhere beyond the pavement is a different question entirely: this is Liwa, and the desert around the dune is serious 4x4 country.

Can you drive up Tal Moreeb yourself?

We could not find any published official rule either way, so we will not invent one. What visitors report: the perimeter is now largely fenced, entry is channelled through the north-west parking area, and locals offer dune-car rides to the top for around AED 100. During the festival the hill climb is a ticketed competition. If you are planning anything beyond parking and walking, ask on the ground first.
